Wheeless-Mexhoma Station 1
The Wheeless-Mexhoma Fire Department is located in far western Cimarron County, just 6 miles from the New Mexico state line, and operates 8 apparatus out of one station comprised of two buildings. The department protects a very rural farming community and covers 390 sq miles, which is shared with the Kenton Fire Department. The department responds to approx. 15 calls a year and currently has 26 volunteers.
Brush 1 - 1967 Kaiser Jeep/1987 WMFD - 100 Hale/300 Tank - Gas/Manual
Brush 1 was the first fire truck for the department when it was established in 1987 and is still in active service today! Brush 1 is usually last out for calls at the department, but is extremely useful in the Black Mesa area of their district.
Brush 2 - 2001 Chevy 2500/WMFD - 200 Hale/300 Tank - Gas/Auto
Brush 2 is usually first out for calls at the department. The cab and chassis was purchased new by the county and the bed was built in house. There is a twin to this unit at nearby Kenton.
Brush 3 - 2003 Ford F350/WMFD - 200 Hale/300 Tank - Gas/Auto
Brush 3 was purchased new by the county and was upfitted in house by department members.
Brush 4 - 1985 Chevy 3500/WMFD - 200 Memphis/300 Tank - Diesel/Auto
The cab and chassis to Brus h4 was obtained through forestry and waws upfitted in house.
Brush 5 - 2009 Chevy 3500/2022 WMFD - 200 CET/350 Tank - Diesel/Auto
Brush 2 is usually second out for calls. The newest addition to the department, Brush 5 was acquired in 2022 by forestry and upfitted in house.
Brush 6 - 1974 AM General/GFD - 500 ?/1000 Tank - Diesel/Manual - ex-Griggs, OK, ex-Keyes, OK
Usually last out for calls, Brush 6 originally served at Griggs, OK and then spent a short time at Keyes, OK before landing at the WMFD.
Tanker 7 - 1990 Ford/2019 WMFD - 200 Banjo/2500 Tank - Diesel/Auto
Tanker 7 was the first purpose built tanker for the department. The cab and chassis was purchased locally, the tank was acquired through forestry, and the entire truck was painted and assembled in house.
